APOGEE

By Blood Or By Star Book 2

Apogee by Tyler E. C. Burnworth AKA Pacey Holden

FIND YOUR PATH

Longarm Detective Djet Rincon struggles to follow in her father’s footsteps as a manhunt for a missing Marine unfolds amidst the murky world of intergalactic politics and off-the-books ops.

But the Marine she seeks is Abraham Zeeben, whose righteous grievances are turned on their head as he trains under the auspices of the elusive Ghost Society.

Scattered across the worlds of the Human Collective are the Pathfinders, embracing biotech augmentation and a contentious post-human ideology. They are the true enemy; their words are a call to arms.

While both Djet and Abraham grapple with the secrets of their respective families, they are set upon fractious paths, their fates inexorably intertwined with the machinations of the Pathfinders.

And a greater war looms.

Delve deeper into Burnworth's action-packed universe of war and intrigue

Abraham's universe expands, as does his knowledge. And he doesn't like what he finds...

Abraham had spent the last forty-five minutes trying desperately to think of a way to talk himself out of selling his soul to the Ghost Society. The constant questions pinging from his friends weren’t helping. It was like they were reading his mind, speaking aloud the doubts that teemed within. He couldn’t reconcile how they were crazy enough to leave their military contracts in pursuit of something none of them really understood. He doubted it was his leadership qualities and his charisma. It had to be something base, something instinctual on their part. The need for understanding, the nagging itch of the unknown that would only intensify if they turned down an opportunity to explore it. Or maybe it was that gut-level instinct to peek behind the curtain. The curtain that separates the perceived truth from the objective truth.

There are three types of people where the curtain is concerned. The first is the person who doesn’t even know the curtain is there. Out of touch, consumed with the business of life, or simply naïve, this person carries on with no concern for the curtain. They have accepted the world around them as immutable fact, assuming their position in society without question.

The second type of person sees the curtain and understands why it’s there. This person knows some great and powerful mystery is being withheld from them, but they accept it, because...the curtain is there for a reason. Whoever hung that curtain must have done so because the mystery is too much for the average person to handle. This person clings to the safety offered by the curtain – they want the curtain.

The third type of person – Abraham included himself and his three friends in this category – wanted to tear the curtain down.

Stephanie Chapman for RF Review

"…the perfect book for fans of dystopian stories with relatable characters…full of espionage, discovery, and suspense…intense attention to detail on the various planets, buildings, and spacecraft…[e]very moment was easy to envision. The vivid inner perspectives of Abraham and Djet displayed their strengths and faults...I was so engrossed in the story."
