To the end of the morning the ranges crush closer, change the funnel to a gash, a two-hundred-meter-wide strip of rock and snow. Sheer cliffs block the feeble sun, the wraith wind screams and clutches my clothes, my matted hair flails my cheeks raw. Soil hardens to rock, snow to ice, flat boulders to mounds of stone; some razor sharp, some overhang ice-laden and threaten to crash down at an instant. We stumble on, slip and fall to deepen old wounds and collect new ones, hold on to each other as we plod or crawl into the teeth of the gale.
