NEMATODES BY DAVID SMITH EBOOK

SUFFER LITTLE CHILDREN...

All the adults are dead...or dying.

Those who remain won't last long in the wake of a deadly pandemic born from genetically modified nematodes marketed as a game-changing pest killer - it turns adults into cannibalistic maniacs.

But this pandemic was no accident - its architects' only mistake was to allow children to survive. Forced into the roles of their murdered guardians, they must now fend for themselves against this relentless threat, navigating a decimated world in a bid to survive, building alliances and strength in the hope that they can stop the total annihilation of humankind.

But each day brings them closer to maturity, closer to adulthood.

And all the adults are dead...or dying.

If you thought Lord of the Flies was a cool concept, yet always wanted a version that was light on philosophy and heavy on excitement (and includes plenty of gunfire) then you will love Nematodes…rural America, after nematodes (microscopic worms that are part of our ecosystem) killed almost all of the adults in America, turning them into flesh-eating, raving lunatics that soon die from the effects. If you saw that old movie The Crazies, the adults are kinda like that…The author does an excellent job portraying Paradise and its inhabitants.  Here, a rough social order has emerged, run by the strong, and force is the only law. The children are shown as you might expect – petty, extremely cruel, lying constantly to save themselves, and willing to turn on each other whenever necessary…a nice job showing what is likely to actually happen, as opposed to trying to portray the kids as suddenly maturing and acting like adults…shifts from being just 'survival of the fittest' to 'will humans survive, in the face of what they learn about the nematode infestation?'…high-octane pacing…you thought the Children of the Corn were bad news? They are bush-league amateurs compared to Caleb and his gang…truly a 'take no prisoners' world and it can be a bit tough to read at times, but it makes for a real page-turner of a story…if you want to see an ugly, ultra-violent world where the kids are every parent's worse nightmare, you don't want to miss this.

Ben returns from a supply raid

“You both okay?” asked Ben.

“What’d you get?” asked Joe. “You got guns! Did you get any ammo? Can I take a look?”

“I asked if you’re both okay!” snapped Ben, dropping the handle of the cart to the ground and stepping across the porch into the house. Joe followed him, the excitement momentarily gone.

Ben gave Amy a little hug at the front door before stepping inside. “You okay?”

She looked up at Ben, then half turned to look over her shoulder at the door that led down to the cellar. Ben could see the fear in her eyes. “It’s okay, Amy,” he said, hugging her again. “It’s okay.”

The wooden cellar door opened into the living room. It was barricaded with enough pieces of junk to keep it from opening from the inside, but not too much that it was too hard to move when Ben needed to go down there.

Ben turned to look at Joe. “Did he start up again?”

“Yeah...about an hour ago,” said Joe.

“He scares me, Ben,” said Amy. “He keeps saying he’s gonna eat us all alive.”

“He’s not gonna do that, Amy,” said Ben, trying to reassure her.

“I’ll never let him hurt you. He can’t get out anyway. I got him chained up real good down there.”

Suddenly, heavy banging started from deep inside the cellar. It sounded like wood on wood, repetitive, powerful and violent.

“He’s gotten hold of something,” said Ben to Joe. “Probably ripped one of the struts off a shelf.”

Then came the howl, like a wild wolf on the hunt, alerting the rest of the pack to a kill. Amy clung tightly to Ben till it stopped.

“I’m comin’ for yah!” John’s voice was deep and menacing, crazy. “I’m comin’ for all of yah! Better start prayin’ to the Lord!”

Amy started to whimper.

“It’s okay, it’s okay. Even if he gets loose, he’s gotta be able to break through that heavy door with his bare hands to get to us. He’ll be quiet soon, I promise.” Hugging Amy closer, Ben looked up at the ceiling. “What about Mom? Is she okay?”

“She ain’t been fed or nothin’ but she’s been quiet. She keeps askin’ for you,” said Joe.

Ben nodded towards the cart outside the porch. “I’ll go and check on her as soon as we put this stuff away. Come on. As soon as we’ve unloaded, we gotta dump the cart in the woods out back.”

Ben didn’t stop when he reached the cart. Instead he continued till he reached the sidewalk outside the house. He stood there listening for a few moments before walking back up the drive to the cart.

“Could you hear him hollerin’ from out there?” asked Joe.

“No. Not from the sidewalk. We’re okay. Come on, you two. Help me get this stuff inside.”
